About me
My name is Paul Corten, in 1996 graduated as a chemist at the Radboud University of Nijmegen. However, for quite some time I'm working in IT now. Electronics has always been an interesting hobby for me.
Around 2005 I discovered that in the electronics hobby, SMD components can easily be applied using standard soldering techniques. SMD is smaller, no drill holes needed, more modern, faster, cheaper, better RF properties. But very difficult to obtain. Parts are only affordable if you buy in whole reels (thousands of parts) at once. Besides many suppliers do sell in minimum quantities only and/or demand a minimum order amount. Often you can only order as a company. Therefore, SMD-parts aren't easy to obtain for the average hobbyist. Already existing web shops didn't want to sell SMD. Then the idea arose to start my own webshop to make SMD components more easily available to individuals. The SMD webshop was then started in 2008.
The SMD-Shop
Currently I run the shop next to a job as an IT engineer. This means I can only spend time on the shop during evenings and weekends. Often I arrive at home from work too late to ship the orders of that day. But usually, an order arrives within 3 working days (NL), and often even the next day.
Known customers and small orders from new customers I will ship asap. Larger orders from new customers must wait for payment in advance. This is a compromise between risk and service. Especially for customers abroad, it can otherwise take a long time for the payment to arrive and then even longer for the order to arrive.
The shop actually costs me a lot of time, unfortunately leaving less time for my electronics hobby. The time is mainly spent in the administration, ordering new stock and exploring new products. Because my electronics knowledge is limited of course, I appreciate it very much when you provide ideas for new products or improvements. Undoubtedly, amongst my customers there are people who are professionally involved in electronics and much more aware of new developments than I am.
Service
I think service is very important. I do a lot of effort to label products properly and packing it firmly to assure that it will arrive intact. However, if there is something wrong with your order or when it arrives damaged, please let me know so I can do something about it.
Saving energy
In my shop, I pay special attention to energy efficiency. Therefore I sell for example Voltage regulators (MCP1702/1703) that almost consume no power themselves and switching voltage regulators (NCP1400/MAX1724) that can run from a very low voltage with high efficiency. In my opinion customers are not sufficiently aware of these kind of techniques. It's a pity that people still run their circuits at 5 volts and using a 7805. Many circuits can also operate at 3 volts or less with low energy consuming (switching) voltage regulators. Tips for new energy-efficient components and -techniques are always very welcome.
I've written this text because I've the feeling that customers sometimes don't understand what kind of business I'm running. They address me as if I'm like a large corporation. So now you know I'm not. I hope this clarifies things a little.
